About Keep Above

What does Keep Above actually do?

Keep Above helps you plan ahead by calculating two reference levels from the bills and income you enter: Critical — enough to cover the bills due before your next income arrives — and Safe — the point where every upcoming bill and goal you've entered is set aside in time. The app shows where your balance sits relative to those levels. You add the data; the app does the math.

Is it free?

Yes. The free plan includes one budget of any kind, with bills and income, saving goals, the calendar view, and a forecast up to 30 years ahead. Premium unlocks up to 10 budgets side by side and the rest of the built-in tools.

What kinds of budget are there?

There are eleven, and you pick one each time you add a budget:

  • Checking — day-to-day money, with your Safe line.
  • Savings — money set aside toward a goal.
  • Credit card — what you owe, and when it would be cleared.
  • Home loan — what's left, and when it would be gone.
  • Loans and payment plans — what goes out, and when each one ends.
  • Trip plan — a trip's costs, dates and who's coming.
  • Event plan — an event's costs, dates and who's paying.
  • Things you own — what the things you own cost you a year.
  • Shopping list — what you buy regularly, and when it would run out.
  • Occasions — birthdays, special days and what they'd cost.
  • Shared bills — bills you split, and each person's share of them.

Everything in every kind is what you enter. None of them connects to a bank or moves money.

Do I need to connect my bank?

No, and you can't. Keep Above is manual-entry by design — we don't ask for bank logins, card numbers, or account details, and we don't connect to any financial institution. You enter what you want to track.

Important: because Keep Above isn't connected to your bank, it doesn't move money, pay bills, or know your real balance unless you enter it. You're responsible for actually paying your bills from your bank account.

What do "Critical" and "Safe" mean?

They're two reference levels Keep Above calculates from the bills, goals, and income you've entered, allocated based on when each bill is due and when you've told us your next income arrives. Critical is the amount needed to cover the bills due before your next income. Safe is the higher level where every upcoming bill and goal you've entered is set aside in time; between the two, the app shows how much of what's coming is covered. Both are planning estimates, not guarantees — their accuracy depends entirely on the information you enter. Always verify against your own bank records before making financial decisions.

What's a sinking fund?

A sinking fund is a method commonly used in personal finance planning where you mentally set aside a small amount regularly to cover a future expense — instead of being surprised by a $300 annual subscription, you'd plan for about $25 a month in advance. Keep Above does this calculation for every bill you add. (Note: the app doesn't move or hold any money — it shows you the math.)

Is the forecast accurate?

The forecast is an estimate based on what you enter. It doesn't account for unexpected expenses, missed bills, bank fees, or anything else outside what's in the app. Always verify against your own records before making financial decisions.

Can I share a budget with someone?

Yes. In the app's Sharing screen, pick a budget and send its code. Whoever enters the code sees the same bills, income and balance on their own phone, and changes show on both. Sharing is per budget, so the ones you don't share stay yours alone. You choose whether each person can edit or only look, and Recent changes lists who changed what. Got a code? Here's how to join.

What's a trip plan?

A trip plan is a budget with an end date and the people going. You set where you're going and when, and the journey draws itself day by day: tap any day to add a place, a flight, somewhere to stay, a cost, a job to sort, a packing list or a note. The plan shows what's put aside against what the trip comes to, splits costs between the people on it, and settles up at the end. Share it and everyone on the trip sees the same plan; a cost put to someone is answered on their own phone and becomes an expense in the budget they choose.

Like every other budget in Keep Above, a trip plan is a plan, not a booking tool — it doesn't book anything, hold money or connect to any account.

Premium & billing

What does Premium include?

Up to 10 budgets side by side, of any kind, and the full set of built-in tools. Your Premium also covers up to five people you share budgets with, so a budget you share doesn't use their free budget.

How much does it cost?

Premium starts with a 30-day free trial. After the trial, it's US$6.99/month or US$29.99/year in the United States — the yearly plan works out about 64% cheaper than twelve months of monthly. Prices are set per country and many countries pay less; you'll see your own local price in the app, and on your app store page, before you pay. You can cancel anytime during the trial and you won't be charged.

How does the subscription work?

  • You start with a 30-day free trial. The trial is available once per subscription group.
  • You won't be charged during the trial. If you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, you pay nothing.
  • If you don't cancel before the trial ends, your subscription automatically begins and your Apple ID or Google Play account is charged the regular subscription price.
  • After that, your subscription automatically renews at the same price and duration unless turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
  • The renewal charge is taken within 24 hours before the end of the current period.
  • You can manage or turn off auto-renewal in your app store account settings at any time.
  • If you start a paid subscription before your free trial ends, any unused portion of the trial is forfeited.

Will I be charged during the free trial?

No. You won't be charged during the 30-day trial. If you cancel at any point at least 24 hours before the trial ends, you pay nothing. If you don't cancel, your subscription begins automatically when the trial ends and you're charged the regular subscription price.

How do I cancel my subscription?

The cancellation steps are the same whether you're in a free trial or a paid subscription:

  • iOS: Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → Keep Above → Cancel Subscription
  • Android: Google Play → Profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Keep Above → Cancel

To avoid being charged at the end of your trial, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends. You'll keep Premium features until the end of the trial period you signed up for.

I paid for Premium but it's not showing on my device. What do I do?

Open Keep Above → Menu → Settings → Restore purchases. Make sure you're signed into the same Apple ID or Google account that originally bought the subscription. If it still doesn't restore, email support@keepabove.com with your purchase confirmation from Apple/Google and we'll help.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are processed by the app store, not by us:

If you're in a country with statutory consumer-rights remedies (such as New Zealand, Australia, or the EU/UK), those remain unaffected.

Does Premium work with iOS Family Sharing?

No — Premium is tied to the account that purchased it and isn't shared via Family Sharing at this time.

Your data & account

Does my data sync between devices?

Yes. Sign in with the same account on your phone, tablet, or new device and your data follows you.

What happens to my data if I uninstall?

Your data stays in your account. Reinstall, sign in, and it's there.

Can I change my sign-in email?

Yes. In the app, open Menu → Profile → Change sign-in email, type the new address and your password, and we'll email a link to the new address. Your sign-in email changes when you open that link; until then it's still the old one. After it changes, sign in with the new address.

Can I get a copy of my data?

Yes. In the app, open Menu → Profile → A copy of your data. It puts the incomes, expenses and saving goals of the budgets you own into a table you can paste into a spreadsheet or send as text, and it can add each day's estimated balance for the next 90 days. Each budget whose kind is Checking, Savings or Credit card, including one shared with you, also has its own copy under Menu → Budgets.

Trip plans, home loans, loans and payment plans, things you own, shopping lists, shared bills, occasions and event plans keep their own lists, which aren't in the copy. The copy only leaves your phone if you paste it or send it. To ask for everything we hold about you, email support@keepabove.com.

How do I delete my account?

Delete it in the app under Menu → Profile → Delete account. That permanently deletes your account and data.

If you can't use the app, email support@keepabove.com from your account's email address and we'll delete it for you within 20 working days. See Delete my data for what is deleted and kept.

Where is my data stored?

With Google Firebase, in the United States. Our Privacy Policy lists every company that handles your data, where, and for how long.

Do you sell my data?

No, and there are no ads. A small number of service providers process data for us — Google Firebase (sign-in, database and crash reports), RevenueCat (subscriptions) and Insert Affiliate (our creator affiliate program). The Privacy Policy has the full list.

Contact & support

I found a bug. What do I do?
